Uncle Toby's O&G Granola

Breakfast vs Sleep. It’s a constant battle.

By | New Products | No Comments

I don’t know about you, but during the week I’m not a huge breakfast eater. The extra 20 minutes spent in the warmth of my bed is too tempting, especially on these frosty mornings – and then it’s a mad rush to everyone ready and out the door. I then spend the next few hours grazing on sugary snacks to get me to through to lunch. Not the worlds’ healthiest diet.

While my weekends are spent enjoying Chia puddings, Acai bowls and Eggs Benedict (nothing beats a good Hollandaise sauce), I’ve discovered that my weekday breakfasts don’t need to be a whole song and dance routine – simple is better than nothing! The new Uncle Toby’s O&G Crunchy Granola range is really hitting the spot – I like to serve mine with a big dollop of creamy Greek Yoghurt and some berries or a sliced banana. And as a compromise – I’ll throw everything into a plastic container the night before (keeping the yoghurt separate) and just grab and go in the morning. Which means I still get to sleep in!

The new Uncle Toby’s range of 4+ Health Star cereals (including the O&G Crunchy Granola range) is available your nearest Drakes store now!

Drakes Charity Golf Day

By | News | No Comments

“It was a perfect day at the Glades Golf Course

In Queensland for the annual Drakes Charity Golf Day in Queensland. At Drakes we are constantly reminded of the value of giving back to the community and it is humbling to see that our suppliers also support our commitment to the community and without hesitation jump on board to contribute. Amongst raising money for a worthy cause – Ronald McDonald House Charities, we enjoyed a day in the sun networking with our valued suppliers who also enjoyed the time to spend with Roger and Bob.

Ronald McDonald Houses are attached to major women’s and children’s hospitals around Australia and provide a home away from home for seriously ill children and their families. We are proud to announce that we raised a total of

$19 575.00

Congratulations to Daniel and Shaun from Lion Dairy and Drinks and our newly appointed State Manager Mark Meszaros who were the winning team!

Drakes Charity Showbag

By | News | No Comments

“Supporting the community has always been an important part of the Drakes business.

I believe that not only Drakes, but all businesses have a corporate social responsibility to support the community in which they operate.

For 16 years, Drakes have teamed up with a number of suppliers to produce the Drakes Charity Showbag, which goes on sale in our South Australian stores throughout the Royal Adelaide Show week. To date, this initiative has raised in excess of $864 182.00.

In 2014, the showbags sold for $5.99ea with a total retail value of just over $40. Our dedicated team acorss our stores sold 21 000 bags raising an astonishing:

$86 620.92

Four major charities – Royal District Nursing Service, Hospital Research Foundation, Flinders Medical Centre Breast Cancer Research and The Phoenix Society, each received a cheque for $21 655.23 at a Morning Tea held at Kooyonga Golf Club on Thursday 14 May 2015.

In total over 560 000 products were generously donated by our supplier partners and packed by the enthusiastic staff at the Phoenix Society. The support from our suppliers is truly humbling as they too believe in the importance in giving back to our community.

We would also like to thank our valued customers for your support of this initiative and look forward to bring you another showbag later this year.

If you are part of a non-for-profit organisation and want to know how you could raise valuable funds for your group visit our Community page for further details.

Welcome to our blog

By | News | One Comment

Welcome to the Drakes Blog, where we endevour to bring you the lastest news, events and innovative ideas from our business and the grocery industry.

It’s hard to believe we are into the first quarter of 2015 and the one thing that is certain, is it is going to be another tough year ahead for independent retailers.

Never before have I heard so many people say they are sick and tired of having to shop at the duopoly and be forced to buy only the products that Coles and Woolworths want to sell. Customers want to have a choice and they want to know they are supporting local manufactures and farmers. It’s easy and probably cheaper to buy Woolworths, Coles and Aldi generics, which in a lot of cases are made overseas and from countries that do not have the same quality and health standards that we have in Australia. A perfect example of this is the resent situation with frozen berries from China.

If there is one thing I am passionate about, that is ensuring we continue to support local businesses, manufacturers, farmers and primary producers. We need to ensure we have our population working in our factories to make sure our farmers and primary producers are successful because if we don’t, we will have a lot of our people collecting unemployment benefits!

We have some of the best stores in the country and one only has to look at our recent refits at Blackwood, Hope Valley and Clovercrest. We will continue with major upgrades and have plans for Newton, Glenunga, Castle Plaza and Ashmore just to mention a few; and our new site at Wallaroo has already commenced works.

We hope you enjoy these regular updates and I look to seeing you at a Drakes store near you.
