The Robern Menz Story

When Johan and Magdelena Menz came to Adelaide from Prussia in 1849 they had no idea the Menz name would become an icon in their new home.

After the success of their Yo Yo’s and Bush Biscuits, they moved into confectionery, starting with Crown Mints in 1892. In 1948 they produced FruChocs to sell excess fruit from the Riverland and Barossa Valley. Now more than 70 years later, fruit is the key ingredient,” says Phil Sims, who runs Robern Menz with his brother Richard. “Challenging seasonal issues happen from year to year, so it’s about trying to maintain a consistency of texture and taste whether it’s with the chocolate or the fruit.”

In 2018/2019, Robern Menz have been proud to revive two Australian classics – Violet Crumble and Polly Waffle. It’s a classic move from a company loved by South Australians for so long. “Since Roger Drake opened his first store over 40 years ago, there would have been a Menz product as part of their portfolio,” says Phil.

Now FruChocs are the 3rd biggest chocolate product within Drakes Supermarkets. “We are really proud of our association with Drakes and full of admiration and respect to the Drakes business and what they have been able to achieve over 40 odd years” says Phil.

Robern Menz products are proudly stocked in all Drakes stores. For more information about this successful SA business, visit their website at
